A Village 1950–2022. Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Ludwig Schirmer
First Exhibition and artist talk at Wunderblock Stiftung
Katharina Grosse and the Wunderblock Stiftung are delighted to present the first exhibition at Trechwitzer Straße 13 in Groß Kreutz.
The Wunderblock Stiftung has set itself the goal of repurposing the old LPG buildings in Groß Kreutz and transforming the site into an area for artists' studios, exhibitions, and cultural activities. The Wunderblock Stiftung is currently still in its founding phase, during which it aims to deepen the understanding of the historical context of the site.
“A Village 1950–2022” is a long-term project by the three photographers —Ludwig Schirmer, his daughter Ute Mahler, and her husband Werner Mahler. It focuses on the Thuringian village of Berka, but at the same time resonates far beyond its boundaries. The photographs raise questions about home, continuity, and change. In spring 2024, they were exhibited to great acclaim at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and also published in an accompanying photo book.
With the exhibition of this special group of works, the Wunderblock Stiftung aims to provide a space for engagement with social structures in rural areas.

The photographs will be on display at the Wunderblock Stiftung from September 26 to 28, 2025 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
On September 28, 2025 at 11:30 a.m., journalist and curator Kito Nedo will talk with the Mahlers about their life and work.
